Cabrinha Race Series Results

Crowded Starting Line during the final race of the season

The whole summer series literally came down to the last leg of the last race, after almost 30 races during the course of the summer.

The Ozone Team filled 3 of the final top 5 positions, out of 44 original entrants... and going into the last race of the season these were the point standings:

Chip Wasson 11
Geoff Headington 17
Jeff Kafka 18
Stefaans Viljoen 18
Rob Kindt 36

Chip Wasson and Jeff Kafka were on a Kitesurf trip to Fiji, missing both the last race and taking a major points hit for DNC at that race.  That pushed those two back and let Geoff Headington and Stephaans fight for the top positions.

Here are Geoff's thoughts on the course and teh conditions, and the decisions that led to the nights race results:
Winds were fairly light, 16-20kts, and shifty, with blue skies - classic fall day for the SF Bay.  Race started with all kites on starboard at the favored boat end with Gebi slipping through the gap for a clean start and early lead.  Coming to the windward mark winds oscillated making the layline tough to judge.  Gebi took the conservative approach an made the mark in one tack, while I and Stephaans, and many others tacked too early and got headed and flooded off the layline.  On tacking back to the layline Stefaans and I swapped 2nd place once but I lead him around the windward and maintained a cushion through the downwind leg.  Heading back upwind to the finish I again tacked onto starboard too early, misjudging the layline due to the wind shifts and lincreasing lulls.  By the time I found a suitable gust to tack back onto port with I had lost the cushion, and had let 2nd place for the race, and 1st place for the season slip away.  That was the only race of the night, so no chance make up for it.

Here are the final results:

1. Stefaans Viljoen  17

2. Geoff Headington 17

3. Chip Wasson 22

4. Jeff Kafka 23

5. Eric Due 41

6. Rob Kindt 41

Overall the Ozone Team showed incredibly well during the series, and really blew it out toward the end with Gebi (Mike Gebhardt) taking 1st on the last 2 nights.  Ozone riders won on 7 out of the 11 nights of racing, split between 3 different riders(!!!), and will have 3 spots of the top-10 on the season, including 2nd and 3rd, clearly positioning Ozone as the most dominant kite of the Cabrinha Series.

While this concludes the Cabrinha summer series, we look forward to races this winter in Seattle, Baja and on the mountain snow.  Congrats to all who put their hearts on the line and raced this year!
